A Passage to India (~ Hindistan'a Bir Geçit) ' Filminin Konusu : Olaylar 1924 yılında, İngiliz sömürgesi olan Hindistan'da geçiyor. Judy Davis'in canlandırdığı Adela Quested, genç ve dikbaşlı bir İngiliz kadın, yanında nişanlısının annesi Mrs. Moore (Peggy Ashcroft) olduğu halde Hindistan'a gelir. Burada tanışıp dost edindiği Dr. Aziz (Victor Banerjee) bir süre sonra Adela'yı mistik Marabar mağaralarına yapacağı ziyarette kendisine katılması için davet eder. Girdikleri bir mağaradan yara izleriyle çıkan Adela, Aziz'in kendisine saldırdığını iddia eder.İngiliz yetkililer Adela'nın mahkeme yoluna gitmesi için baskı yaparak, Aziz'i adeta yargılanmadan suçlu ilan ederler. Suç işlendiğine dair en ufak bir kanıt bile bulunmadığı halde Aziz, İngilizlerin ve kendi halkının gözünde saygınlığını yitirir.

e m forster'in anti-emperyal düşüncelerini barındıran bir kitap ve david lean'in cinsel temalar üzerine yapılandırdığı bir film. lean filmde forster'ın kitabını işlemiş olmasına rağmen, forster'ın hindistan'ı doğru anlamadığını düşündüğü için hikayeye kendi yorumunu getirmiş.filmin orta noktası adela quested, onun cinsellik, aşk üzerine düşünceleri ve diğer insanlarla olan ilişkisi. filmin arka planında da forster'ın işlediği anti-colonial hava görülmekte. ancak her ne kadar lean ingilizleri alaya alıyor gibi gözükse de kitapta üstüne basa basa çirkin olduğu söylenen adela ve daha kitabın hemen başında kırmızı burunlu olarak tasvir edilen heaslop, filmde gazet eli yüzü düzgün oyuncular canlandırılmışlar (adela'yı judi davis oynuyordu sanırım). ünlü bir brahmin profesör olan godbole de ingiliz bir bir oyuncu tarafından canlandırılmış ve aptal parodik bir karakterden öteye geçememiş haliyle. bunun dışında klasik emperyalist bilinçaltının getirdiği imgeler de yok değil. şimdi hatırlamadığım bir makalede, lean'in ne kadar anti-colonial bir eseri filme aktarsa da ister istemez emperyalist bir bakış açısına sahip olacağını, çünkü yetiştiriliş tarzının, çocukluğunun geçtiği dönemin ve inançlarının buna neden olacağını savunuluyordu.film ve kitap hakkında yazılabilecek onlarca sey var. lean'in filmdeki saçmalamaları insanı rahatsız ediyor, ancak bu yine de filmi lean'in en güzel eserlerinden birisi olmaktan alıkoymuyor kanımca. ayrıca forster yaşadığı süre içerisinden kitabın sinemaya adaptasyonuna hep karşı çıkmış.

kitabın temelinde ingilizlerle hindistanlıların arkadaş olup olamayacağı sorusu yatmaktadır. sonunda ise forster'ın topografik elementlerle bu soruya bir cevap verdiğini söylemek mümkün. aslında elementlere şunlara bunlara gerek yok bu cevap için. bir yanda böl-yönet anlayışı içinde sömürgeci bir devlet, diğer tarafta ise etnik farklılıklardan dolayı sivil savaş çıkacağı masalıyla uyutulup 'koruma' adı altında sömürülen, kendi topraklarında ikinci sınıf konumuna düşürülmüş, ötekileştirilmiş ve köleleştirilmiş bir toplum haline dönmüş hindistan. sorunun cevabı çok basit gibi.

forster'ın en ünlü romanı. yazar, karakterlerin beyinlerinin içine girer, sonra çıkar dağları, şehirleri, tapınakları anlatır, hintlilerin düzensizliklerinden, dar görüşlülüklerinden, hindistan'ın nasıl da mistik bir "muddle” olduğundan bahseder, kendini beğenmiş ingilizleri alaya alır biraz, ara sıra da kara mizaha yer verir. belirsizlikler, cevapsız veya binlerce cevabı olan sorular, yanlış anlamalarla dolu olan kitabında yazarın bakış açısı da belirsizdir, yer değiştirir sürekli. forster modernizme güzel bir örnek teşkil eden a passage to india'da tarafsız değildir hiç bir zaman, (ki “objective” kelimesinin kullanımı bu kitabı tartışırken yasaklanmıştır sınıfta) doğulu ve batılı steryotipleri üzerine kuruludur çoğu karakter, ancak anti-kolonici veya kolonici de denilemez onun için. son cümle okunduğunda bile forster’ın gerçekten neyi savunduğunu söylemek zor gelir.
