h.p. lovecraft'ın charles dexter ward olayı adlı öyküsünden uyarlanan ve içinde edgar allan poe'dan esintiler içeren, roger corman'ın yönettiği güzel film. joseph curwen i canlandıran oyuncu vincent price, role cok iyi oturmustur ki zaten kendisi yönetmenin en sevdiği oyunculardandır.

sunu belirtmeden gecmiiim ki söminenin üstündeki curwen portresi tarafımdan pek beğenildi.

filmin sonunun poe'nun the haunted palace adlı şiiriyle yapılmasıysa beni benden almıstır,yüzümde haşin bir gülümseme belirtmiştir:
and travellers, now, within that valley,

edgar allen poe's haunted palace diye geçse de aslen lovecraft'in charles dexter ward davası'ndan uyarlanan bi filmdir. ama izledik gördük ki lovecraft'in o manyak detaycılığından eser yok, hikaye de çok farklı zaten. birkaç corman numarasını es geçersek tipik oldschool dehşet sineması yorumunu yapabiliriz.

the fall of the house of usher icinde de bulunan edgar allan poe siiri. oykuden 6 ay once, 1839'da yayinlanmistir. the fall of the house of usher'a esin kaynagi oldugu soylenir. oyku gibi zitliklar ve analojilerden olusur bu siir de. soyledir:

in the greenest of our valleys
by good angels tenanted,
once a fair and stately palace-
radiant palace- reared its head.
in the monarch thought's dominion-
it stood there!
never seraph spread a pinion
over fabric half so fair!

banners yellow, glorious, golden,
on its roof did float and flow,
(this- all this- was in the olden
time long ago,)
and every gentle air that dallied,
in that sweet day,
along the ramparts plumed and pallid,
a winged odor went away.

wanderers in that happy valley,
through two luminous windows, saw

h.p. lovecraft'ın the case of charles dexter ward adlı kısa romanından uyarlanmış olmasına karşın; roger corman'ın edgar allan poe uyarlamalarıyla işi gayet güzel götürmekte olan american-international, önceki filmlerin dümen suyuna gitsin diye lovecraft'ın adını kaldırıp, filmi başlı başına bir poe uyarlaması olarak lanse etmiştir.
