resim ve siir dunyasindan alti kisi ile beraber birbirlerine destek olduklari ve karsi saldirilara karsi beraber savunduklari pre-raphaelite brotherhood kurucusu. ilk zamanlarda yazdigi siirleriyle john keats'in etkilendigi kisilerden. dante ismini daha sonra kendisi dante alighieri'ye hayranligindan dolayi eklemis. asiri dozda laudanum alip olen elizabeth siddal, fanny cornworth, jane morris resimlerinde ilham aldigi kisiler olmus. en guzel resimlerinden biri. butun resimleri buradan gorulebilir.

the one hope siiri;

aslında victorya dönemi ingiliz şair-ressamı olsa da romantizme daha yakındır. ön-rafeoculuk akımının öncüsüdür. yine şair olan christina rossetti'nin de erkek kardeşidir.

yaptığı resimlere eşlik etmesi için de harika soneler yazmıştır. aşağıda sibylla palmifera 'ya yazılmış " soul's beauty" var.

"under the arch of life, where love and death,
terror and mystery, guard her shrine, ı saw

hers are the eyes which, over and beneath,

burda ise bu sone ile zıtlık içeren beauty of body'i simgeleyen lady lilith var. sone'nin adı da "beauty of body".

and her enchanted hair was the first gold.
and still she sits, young while the earth is old,
and, subtly of herself contemplative,

bu iki eser yani "soul' beauty" ve "beauty of body" ingiliz edebiyatında da sanat tarihinde de önemli yer tutar ve ayrılmaz ikilidir. sonraları -lady lilith- feminizmin sembollerinden biri haline gelecek, palmifera'ya kiyasla yarattigi erotik atmosferin, dolayisiyla da kadinların cinselliginin,özgürlügünün ve gücünün temsili olacaktır.

hem şair hem ressam olduğu için bu iki özelliğini şiirlerinde birleştirmiş bir 19.yy ingiliz şairidir. yazdığı şiir sanki bir tabloymuş gibi gözünüzde canlanmaktadır ya da şiire uygun bir resim çizmiştir bile. kendisi gibi düşünen bir grubu vardır (bkz: pre-raphaelite). ortaçağ dönemindeki sanat anlayışına geri dönmeyi savunuyorlar. bu nedenle yazdıkları şiirlerde ve resimlerde ortaçağa ait özellikler bulunmaktadır. onların resimleri genellikle (bkz: educa)'nın puzzle'larında bulunur . 11 şubat 1863'te ölen karısı elizabeth siddal(lizzie)'in cenazesinde bütün şiirlerini tabutun içine koyar. kederi azalınca yaptığı bu dramatik jestten pişmanlık duymaya başlar ve 1870'te lizzie'nin tabutunu açtırır. cesedin saçlarına dolanmış şiirler, ertesi yıl ilk kitabı house of life'ta yayınlanır.

karısı elizabeth siddal^*'ı kaybetmesiyle düştüğü bunalımdan ölene dek çıkamayan şair-ressam. özellikle önceki eserlerinde görülen rafael öncesi^* etki bir kenara, resimlerinde sevgililerinin güzelliklerini erotizmle süslemiş fakat içlerinden sadece bir tanesini tanrıçalaştırmıştır; iş ortağının karısı jane burden morris. ki "düş kurma" adlı eserinde yeşiller içinde gündüz düşlerine dalmış bu kadının, londra hayvanatbahçesi'nde sık sık ziyaret ettiği vombatları düşündüğünü sanıyordu boyalarla oynarken diye rivayet ediliyor.
