timsah esasen "crocodilia" teriminin karşılığıdır. bu kavram alligator dahil olmak üzere, crocodile, gharial ve false gharial gibi bütün timsah çeşitlerini kapsamaktadır. insanların timsah deyince ilk akıllarına gelen crocodile'dir. ancak crocodile de bir timsah türüdür. bu nedenle alligator'ın timsah olmadığı düşüncesi yanlıştır. çünkü crocodile bir timsah türü olduğu kadar, alligator da pekala bir timsah türüdür.
