south dakota state college of agriculture and mechanic arts'dan mezun olmuş bu arada spor muhabirliği yapmış, boş zamanlarında muhtelif dergilere yazmış, tatillerde ise ortabatıda dolaşan karnaval ve çadır gösterilerinde çalışmıştır.

mezuniyetten sonra minneapoliste reklam müdürü olarak bir müddet çalışmış, oradan lancaster pa'ya taşınmış ve armstrong cork company'de 24 yıl pazarlama, ürün geliştirme ve test bölümlerinde çalışmıştır.

bu müddet zarfında 1940'lar ve 50'lerde saturday evening post , mccalls ve diğer süreli yayınlarda yer bulan düzinelerce kısa hikayeler ve makaleler yazmıştır.

iş dünyasından ayrıldıktan 1 yıl sonra 1952 de "executive suite" isimli romanını yayınlamıştır.

the film rights were snapped up by mgm and producer john houseman, and with robert wise directing from ernest lehman's script, the resulting movie was one of the top dramas of its period, and a superb showcase for william holden, barbara stanwyck, fredric march, paul douglas, and a brace of other top acting talent. (strangely enough, elements similar to those in its plot worked their way decades later into a key subplot of garry marshall's hit movie pretty woman, as part of the makeup of the richard gere character and his motivations.)
