senaryosu gerçek bir generalden ilham alınarak yazılmış 1928 yapımı sessiz film. ernst lubitsch çarlık rusyası zamanından tanıdığı bir generalle devrim sonrası new york'a gelip işlettiği restoranda karşılaşır. daha sonra aynı general lubitsch'in çektiği bir filmde figüranlardan biri olarak karşısına çıkar. lubitsch bu generalin hikayesini janningsvari bularak emil jannings'e aktarır. jannings de macar yazar lajos biro'ya anlatır ve john goodrich'le birlikte filmin senaryosunu kaleme alırlar.
