birds of a feather söylemi aslında eski ingilizcede "aynı tipteki tüye sahip kuşlar" anlamına geliyor. böyle olunca görece geniş perspektifli bir toplantıda "birbirine yakın konular çalışan" kişiler doğaçlama gruplaşıp yeni mevzular tartışabiliyor.

bunun bir örneği astronomy and computing dergisinin (elsevier, hakemli dergi) ortaya çıkışıdır. bir astronomi konferansında "computational astronomy" çalışan ekip bir araya gelip "ulan böyle bir dergi çıkarsak ya" diye toplantı yapıyor. kısacası aynı tipten tüyleri olan kuşlar bir araya gelip kaynatıyor... plansız bir toplantı. ve sonuçta ortaya bu dergi çıkıyor.
