şöyle oluyor: canicula latince küçük köpek demek; canis malum köpek, canicula köpekcik. canicula aynı zamanda latinlerin sirius yıldızına verdikleri isim zira köpek yıldızı büyük köpek takımyıldızının en parlak yıldızı. büyük köpek aynı zamanda avcı takımyıldızının köpeklerinden büyük olanı. sirius'un yıl içinde ilk ortaya çıkışı temmuz ayında olduğu için yaz sıcaklarına taa eski yunanlardan beri köpek günleri deniyor. ingilizler de geri kalmayıp dog days diyorlar. biz de ne zamandır "dog day afternoon ne biçim film ismi.. ne alaka yaa??" diye düşünüp duruyorduk..
