walter tevis'in bir romanı. brave new world ve fahrenheit 451'e benzerlikleri dikkat çekicidir. türkçe'ye çevrilip, çevirilmediğine dair bir fikrim yok, ancak bilimkurgudan ve distopyalardan hoşlananların mutlaka okuması gereken bir kitap. ben ingilizcesini pandora'dan buldum.

roman, insanların okumayı unuttuğu, nüfusun sürekli olarak azaldığı, her türlü yakın ilişkinin yasaklandığı ve suç sayıldığı ("quick sex is the best"), uyuşturucu kullanmanın teşvik edildiği ("don't ask - relax"), hemen her türlü işin robotlar tarafından yapıldığı ve insanların kendilerine hizmet etmek için üretilmiş bu robotlardan (bir çocuğun ebeveynlerinin kendisine kızmasından korkması gibi) korkar hala geldiği ve uygarlığın yok olmakta olduğu bir gelecek tasvir ediyor. hikaye, kitabın üç ana karakteri dokuzuncu nesil robotların sonuncusu robert spofforth, okumayı kendi kendine öğrenen "profesör" paul bentley ve uyuşturucu kullanamayan, isyankar kadın mary lou borne etrafında gelişir.

bendeki versiyonun kapağında "science fiction's great neglected master, one of the definitive bridges between sf and literature" ("bilimkurgunun büyük ihmal edilmiş ustası, bk ile edebiyat arasındaki belirgin köprülerden biri") diye yazıyor. belli ki lafı eden (al sarrantonio diye biri) bilimkurguyu edebiyatın bir kolu olarak görmüyor. aptalca bir yaklaşım. bilimkurgu romanı diye bir şey olamaz. iyi roman ve kötü roman vardır. mockingbird kesinlikle "iyi" olanlardan.
